Weekend Recap 8.29.16 Baseball games, lake time, and sushi!

Happy Monday everyone!  How was your weekend?  My weekend was really nice, but too short as always!  Let’s back up to Friday and I’ll show you what happened around here the past few days.

During lunch on Friday, my husband and I had a date to workout.  We completed this workout from Moorenutritious (find them on instagram!) in our garage and it kicked our butts.  I am STILL sore from it.  It is quick, but very efficient = my kind of workout!

IMG_2502

And ofcourse, there was a long walk with the pups afterwards.

Friday afternoon we drove our cars to get Kroger gas (my mom lets us use her fuel points once in awhile and we get gas so cheap) and I took my two trash bags full of clothes to donate in hopes that I would find a drop box.  Well, not only did I find a drop box to donate my clothes, but this particular one takes the clothing to a thrift shop that sells the clothing and all the profits go to the Texas Regional Animal Rescue.  Rescuing animals is one of my greatest passions (all of my pups – past and present- are rescues) so I was so excited to donate my clothes!

IMG_2508

We had plans to attend the Rangers game with my sister and her boyfriend on Saturday night, but when we saw some good seats pop up on Friday night for a good price, we snagged them up and headed to the stadium.

IMG_2522

The Cleveland Indians were in town all weekend and I’ve been an Indians fan since I was little (my parents are from near there) so it was really fun to see them in Dallas.

IMG_2523

We ended up leaving during the 9th inning when it was 12 to 1 (Indians).

IMG_2509

After a quick treadmill run on Saturday morning, I went to watch my husband play tennis at SMU.  It was extremely hot, but it was fun to watch.  Tennis is a sport that I really wish I was good at.

IMG_2511

We were both pretty exhausted Saturday afternoon so we watched a couple shows and took some naps 🙂 before heading to the Saturday night game with the crew.

IMG_2525

Love these peeps!

We had seats in the nosebleeds, but it was still really fun!

IMG_2515

This is what you call a fair-weather fan… My husband asked me who I was rooting for.. and I said whoever is winning. 😉

IMG_2537

My sister and I in our Indians shirts and Rangers hats. 🙂

IMG_2532

After the game, there was a free Scotty McCreery concert so we stayed for a little bit of that.

IMG_2544

Sunday after church, we headed out to the lake for some relaxing in the sun with our pups!

IMG_2547

Then we got ready for a sushi date night!

IMG_2545

It was half-priced sushi night so we got a bunch of rolls to split and they were all amazing!!!

After dinner, we hurried home to watch the season finale of The Night Of. We didn’t quite finish it (I kept falling asleep), but gosh I am loving this show.  It is soo good!!  Off to get lots of stuff done today.  I hope you all have a fantastic week!

Questions:

  1. If you could be really good at any sport, what sport would it be?
  2. Are you watching The Night Of?
  3. What was the highlight of your weekend?

Foodie Friday

Happy Friday ya’ll!!  Who’s excited for the weekend!?!?  I sure am!  Another weekend at home filled with some fun and lots of relaxing = my kind of weekend!! We have plans to go to a baseball game, a hot air balloon festival, spend some time on the lake and a sushi date night!  So excited!

This week has been quite a productive one with lots of cleaning, organizing and getting stuff done around the house that I have been putting off for months.  Oops.  I finally got around to cleaning out my closet and was able to fill two trash bags full of clothes to donate.  Such a good feeling!!

Today’s post is all about gooood food and there has been a lot of it lately. 🙂

Brussels sprouts.  Do you guys like these?  I love them!  My husband could do without so I eat them a lot when he’s out of town.  This week I tried some that came frozen and you just steam them up (they are already seasoned) and they were SO delicious!

IMG_2426

Easy lunches are the best.  Earlier this week I whipped up a quick green smoothie and had it alongside two rice cakes.  One was topped with avocado and one was topped with a lentil dip.  Yum!! A little sweet and a little salty = the best!

IMG_2472

A couple nights ago I was getting ready to make dinner and realized we were running really low on groceries so I searched the pantry and found lentils.  I think lentils are such an underused item.  I cooked the lentils and cooked up veggies I had on hand (carrots, onions, spinach, and zucchini) along with some garlic, lemon juice, salt, pepper, and fresh parsley.

IMG_2476

It was quite tasty and I had leftovers for a few lunches this week, which is my favorite!

IMG_2477

The kale at my grocery store has looked great lately, but yesterday it did so I grabbed a few bunches! Last night I made a huge kale salad topped with almonds, craisins, beets, hard-boiled eggs, and avocado.  Oh, it sure hit the spot! I just love salads with lots of goodies on top!

IMG_2491

Lastly, breakfast this morning was vanilla greek yogurt topped with sliced bananas and chopped walnuts.  And coffee, always coffee.  Which reminds me… time for cup number 2!

IMG_2496

You guys didn’t think I could end a post without a picture of the pups, did you?  😉 These cuties were VERY excited for their walk yesterday!

IMG_2483

Have a wonderful weekend, ya’ll!!

Questions:

  1. What are your plans for the weekend?
  2. Do you like brussels sprouts?
  3. Do you like lentils?  Favorite recipe?

Tropical Green Smoothie!

Hi guys!  I couldn’t start this post without saying a huge thank you for all the sweet comments and messages I received regarding yesterday’s blog post.  It is so nice to hear that other people find the same benefit from therapy that I do.  I really appreciate all the thoughtful words!  Love you guys!

Today’s post is on a much lighter note.  So sometimes I daydream that I am laying on a beach somewhere tropical with no worries or a care in the world.  And it wouldn’t hurt to have a cold, refreshing smoothie in my hand either.  This smoothie doesn’t have alcohol in it, but I wouldn’t judge you if you added a splash of rum to it. 😉

This smoothie is light, refreshing, and very tropical.  It is great for breakfast or a morning snack.  It is healthy and full of nutrients while also satisfying a sweet craving!

IMG_2482

Tropical Green Smoothie

1 banana

1 cup of frozen pineapple

1/2 cup of frozen mango

1 cup (or more) of spinach

2 teaspoons of ground flaxseed

1 splash of pineapple juice

1/2-1 cup of coconut water (depending on how think you like your smoothie)

Add all ingredients to the blender and blend away!

Enjoy this smoothie poolside (or at your desk…).  I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

  2. Favorite smoothie recipe?

Does Therapy Make Me Weak?

Today I want to discuss a topic that I believe often gets overlooked.  Therapy.  I currently see a therapist and have seen one at different points in my life for various reasons.  I won’t go into details about the reasons I am currently seeing a therapist, but I will say that it is for more than one reason and I have always found many benefits by discussing issues with an outsider who has no bias.  Often we think of people who need therapy as “broken” or “wounded,” but I don’t think I am either of those.  I believe people who seek outside help are often stronger than they get credit for.  Realizing your issue(s) is bigger than you is a huge step in personal development.  It shows that you are human and understand that you can’t fix everything (by yourself).  I want to share the different reasons I believe in therapy and how it helps me.

  1. My therapist helps me see things through a different light.  Therapy helps me to take a step back and realize that my view is very narrow.
  2. Talking issues through is a part of self-healing.  Acknowledging your mistakes and faults is part of the healing and growing process.
  3. You learn new things about yourself.  Some people don’t see the benefit of therapy because they think therapists just listen.  While they do listen, they often make suggestions of ways you could approach situations different or think about an issue in a new way.
  4. Sometimes you do answer your own questions.  By hearing your thoughts out loud, sometimes you are able to see how crazy/funny something sounds and realize you need to make a change.
  5. Therapy is a stress reliever.  I am an emotional person.  A little thing can make me sad/frustrated pretty quickly.  By talking things through with my therapist, I am able to get everything out without exploding on an individual who hurt or upset me.
  6. It is my me time.  Having a designated time to talk about my feelings and really think past situations through is very valuable for me.  I am the type of person to sweep things under the rug and try to move on quickly, but therapy forces me to go back to certain situations and think about how they could have been handled differently.  It has definitely taught me to address the problem head on rather than avoiding it.
  7. Therapy has helped me realize that I am not the only one.  My therapist has helped me to realize that something I might think is a huge deal is really not that abnormal at all.  My therapist has helped me to realize that a lot of people go through the same struggles that I do.  It is nice to hear that you are not alone (or crazy).
  8. There is almost always a fix.  Therapy has helped me realize that there are ways to fix certain behaviors and ways of dealing with situations.  You don’t have to change who you are to better yourself.  I am constantly striving to be a better version of myself and to have the opportunity to learn of ways to do this from a professional is very helpful.

Therapy is not for everyone.  I totally get that.  But, I do think most people could benefit from it.  You do not have to have something terrible happen to feel the need to talk to someone.  Therapy can be beneficial in all stages of life.  In life, we all go through turning points/major changes such as figuring out a career, job searching, completing a degree, getting married, moving, having children, etc.  These can all be very positive moments in life, while being very overwhelming and unsettling at the same time.  I think it is important for people to understand that therapy does not make you weak.  In fact, I believe it makes you really strong.  Sometimes it is hard to tell a complete stranger everything about you, including your flaws.  But, the benefits certainly outweigh the costs.  If you are thinking about seeing a therapist for any reason (you may not have a reason at all), I encourage you to do it.

As always, feel free to contact me if you have any questions about this topic and I will do my best to answer them!  Have a wonderful day!

Questions:

  1. Have you ever gone to therapy?
  2. What was the biggest life change you have encountered so far?
  3. What is your favorite way to spend “me” time with yourself?

Weekend Recap 8.22.16… Rain, Boat, Family, Tennis and A New Favorite Meal

Good morning!!!  Can’t believe it is already Monday, but unlike usual Monday mornings, I feel relaxed and ready to start the week off right.  This weekend was filled with fun, but also really relaxing, which is nice for a change.  I started this morning off on the right foot with a 6am Body Pump class followed by a big smoothie!! Definitely my favorite way to start the day.

Let’s back up to Friday so I can show you what the weekend looked like around here!  Friday night, my husband and I had plans to try out a new restaurant, but unfortunately with the bad weather in Texas, his flight got diverted to OKC and he didn’t make it home in time for our date.  But that’s okay, we had a rainy night in catching up on the new show, The Night Of.  Are any of ya’ll watching this show?  It is getting goooood.

Saturday began with a dog walk and some coffee before a quick at-home work out.

IMG_2425

My mom is currently driving with my cousin from Ohio to Arizona to take him back to college for his Junior year.  Saturday they stopped at our house for dinner and a good night’s rest before continuing on the long drive.  Riley was SO excited to see my mom.  He sleeps in bed with her every time she visits and last night he went and sat by the guest room door just waiting for her thinking she was still there.  Oh, the sweetness!

IMG_2450

Good luck to my cousin, Sean, in his junior year in college this year!  Such an exciting time in life!

IMG_2452

My sister and her boyfriend came over for dinner Saturday night so we started the night with some appetizers.  One dip is a store bought red pepper hummus and the other was a lentil dip I made.

IMG_2444

We grilled salmon, corn on the cob, and roasted potatoes for a yummy dinner.  After dinner we spent time chatting and played a game of Catch Phrase, which is always very entertaining.

After a long walk with the pups on Sunday morning, my husband and I headed out to the lake for a little boat time.  We cruised around, ate lunch and I pulled my husband on the wakeboard for a while before calling it a day.

My sister and her boyfriend have been playing tennis lately and invited us to play Sunday evening.  My husband played tennis in high school  and still plays on a few leagues and I am the most uncoordinated person you will ever meat.  I definitely improved as the evening went on, but I still need a LOT of work. 😉 It sure was fun to switch things up and try a new form of exercise though.

Sunday around lunch time, I decided to throw a bunch of veggies (leftover roasted sweet potatoes, celery, carrots, onion, and broccoli) in a saute pan with some spices and top the mixture with avocado and two fried eggs.  It was SO good.  I always forget the simplicity of veggies topped with an egg, but this meal will definitely be in my current meal rotation for a while.  Yum!

I am off to breakfast with my husband to make up for our lack of a date night on Friday.  Have a great week, ya’ll!

Questions:

  1. What did you do this weekend?
  2. What meal is currently a favorite at your house?
  3. Do you play tennis?

Things Making Me Happy This Week

Happy Thursday, ya’ll!  I can’t believe tomorrow is already Friday!  Looking forward to a date night with my hubby and a little more family time on Saturday.  My dad and brother leave today and I am a little sad.  We had such a fun week full of activities and relaxation.  It was a blast!

I am the type of person that definitely appreciates the small things in life.  I love a hand-written note, someone holding the door for me, a little compliment or even a “thank you.”  I am very detail-oriented and I always notice small acts of kindness.  Today I wanted to share 10 small things that have recently made me really happy.

  1. Family time.  Family is the most important thing to me.  I have a really great support system around me and I am so lucky for that.
  2. Reading.  This year I promised myself to make reading a bigger part of my life and I can say that I certainly have kept this promise to myself.  I think reading helps me see situations through different lenses, learn new words, and broaden my horizon.  Last night my brother read to me for his nightly reading.  He is the cutest.

IMG_2408

3.The cooler temperatures in Dallas this week.  Yes, it has been super cloudy and rainy, but I am so thankful for the weather that has been in the high 70s to low 80s all week.  It has been really really nice.

4. Sleep.  I have been really trying to prioritize my sleep lately and it is really making a difference.  I feel so much better during the day and notice I am a lot less cranky too.

5. The unconditional love of a dog.  You guys already know I am obsessed with all dogs, but this one will always make my list.  I just love dogs because they forgive easily and love unconditionally no matter what.  They don’t dwell on anything and they aim to please at all times.  My dogs are by no means angels, but I can’t stay mad at them long.  🙂

6. Laughter.  Laughter is the best medicine.  Whether it is with friends, family, a good book or your favorite TV show, laughing should be part of every day.  Last night we played Apples to Apples and had a lot of laughs! 🙂

7. Clean sheets.  There is no better feeling than getting into a freshly made bed with warm sheets!

8. The ability to run.  I am so grateful that even with my back/neck issues I am still able to exercise daily.  When I am moody, my husband often asks if I have exercised today.  Even he knows how much I need it.  Exercise is much more important for my mental state than my physical state.

9. Diet coke.  I am not a regular soda drinker and haven’t been for years, but every once in a while, I crave a cold diet coke.  I had one earlier this week and gosh was it good!

10.  Four weddings in the next couple months!  It is always nice to have something to look forward to.  I am really excited for our friends and family that are joining the married life and so excited that we get to witness it!

That’s all I’ve got for today!! Have a great Thursday and I will see you tomorrow!

Questions:

  1. What is one small thing that is currently making you happy?
  2. Are you a soda drinker?
  3. Do you like to read?  What are you currently reading?
